  1. After talking to my friend Jeremy at work, I decided that I would post a brief stage by stage progression of my Blizzcon Demo piece that I finished up yesterday.

If anybody has any questions, feel free to ask!!!

  3. Are the color swatches from a design document (for the character) -or are they something you set up whenever you do a painting?
Can you tell us a little more about them and how you use them?

  4. The swatches were only there for the benefit of the watchers of the demo at Blizzcon. Ahead of time, I chose some colors to work from so that I could experiment with how the colors would mix before the show. In the end, the colors I ended up using varied pretty differently from the colors I "chose" in the beginning.

When I work on "real" pieces, I don't ever use swatches. I go through a sometimes extensive color rough stage to choose the color comp/flavor of the piece before I jump into detail. This color comp gives me a lot of the palette that I'll use to build up a piece.

The whole process is always fluid and always changing and never the same as the piece before, but that experimentation is a lot of what makes it fun.

  7. Oh wait, you mean the small head concept above the palette. That is not mine...I actually don't know who did that one, but I wanted to have it on hand for flavor reference....
